The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday appointed senior diplomat Vishwesh Negi as India's next Ambassador to Iran, entrusting him with a key diplomatic assignment at a time when the West Asia region continues to witness heightened geopolitical tensions.

A 2002-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Negi is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. According to an official statement issued by the MEA, he is expected to assume his new diplomatic responsibilities in Tehran shortly.

The ministry stated, " Vishwesh Negi, presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Islamic Republic of Iran. "

His appointment comes at a strategically important time as Iran remains at the centre of regional instability. The West Asia region has been under increased strain since February 28, when the United States and Israel carried out military strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory action from Tehran. The developments have intensified security concerns across the region and drawn international attention.

India has consistently advocated a peaceful resolution to the conflict, reiterating that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective means to restore stability in the region. New Delhi has maintained close engagement with all stakeholders while emphasizing restraint and de-escalation.

As India's new envoy, Vishwesh Negi is expected to play an important role in strengthening India-Iran bilateral relations, advancing diplomatic engagement, and safeguarding India's strategic interests in the region. Iran remains an important partner for India in areas such as regional connectivity, energy cooperation, and trade, making the ambassadorial role particularly significant amid the evolving geopolitical landscape.
