Vishwak Sen's 'Cult' Trailer Promises Gore And Grit As A-Rated Film Releases Today
Vishwak Sen is returning to the director's chair with 'Cult', an A-rated slasher thriller that promises graphic violence, brutal action and chilling sequences. The makers unveiled the film's release trailer on Thursday, October 29, ahead of its theatrical release today, October 30. Promoted as India's first slasher film, the project marks Vishwak's third directorial venture.
The latest trailer shifts its focus to DSP Sankalp Nayak, played by Vishwak Sen. His character refuses to tolerate locals in Goa harassing non-locals, particularly Telugu people, and moves to the coastal state to protect them. However, the trailer's closing portions reveal his ruthless side, showing him embarking on a violent killing spree at a party.
While the earlier trailer introduced the film's premise and a deadly party setting, the new footage highlights Vishwak's aggressive characterisation, intense action and stylised slasher sequences. The violence features exaggerated, almost cartoon-like visuals, giving the trailer a distinctive presentation.
The film has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), reflecting its adult-oriented content. Reports also indicate that the censor board recommended cuts and modifications. Its runtime has been reported at approximately two hours and 30 minutes.
Vishwak has previously directed 'Falaknuma Das' and 'Das Ka Dhamki'. For 'Cult', he has taken charge of the story, screenplay and direction while also playing the lead role. He has reportedly described the project as an ambitious experiment aimed at taking its content beyond language barriers.
The film features Gayatri Bharadwaj as the female lead, while Murali Sharma plays a politician and Srikanth Iyengar appears as a senior police official. Tarak Ponnappa, Karthikeya, Anirudh Bhaskar, Ezy, Yagnya Turlapati, Kabeer Bhartiya and Vishak Nair also feature in important roles.
Produced by Sandeep Kakarala under Tarak Cinemas, the film features music by Ravi Basrur, with dialogues written by Tharun Bhascker. Cinematography is handled by Aravind Viswanathan, while Ravi Teja Girijala is the editor.
Meanwhile, the makers cancelled the film's pre-release event amid the cyclone situation in Andhra Pradesh, expressing solidarity with those affected. The cancellation has not changed the announced release date.
With its graphic violence and unconventional genre, 'Cult' arrives in theatres today, October 30. Its box-office performance and audience response will determine whether Vishwak's directorial experiment succeeds.
