Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting believes Indian superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have the hunger, fitness and determination to continue playing until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, despite both veterans stepping away from Test cricket and nearing the final phase of their international careers.

Ponting’s comments come amid growing debate over the future of India’s senior batting icons, who now feature only in the ODI format for the national side while relying heavily on the IPL for competitive cricket. The former Australia captain, who led his side to consecutive World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007, said champion players should never be underestimated.

Speaking to PTI, Ponting praised Kohli’s relentless consistency and Rohit’s improved fitness levels during the ongoing IPL season. “You never write off champion players,” Ponting said. “Virat’s determination and desire to win are still clearly there, and Rohit has turned up in probably the best physical condition I’ve seen from him in 10 or 12 years.”

Kohli has once again delivered a standout IPL campaign, scoring 542 runs in 13 matches , including a century, while maintaining a strike rate above 160. The 37-year-old has successfully adapted to modern T20 demands without losing his trademark consistency. Earlier this year, Kohli also crossed the landmark of 14,000 ODI runs , strengthening his status as one of the greatest white-ball batters in cricket history behind only Sachin Tendulkar.

He also played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph , producing a century against Pakistan and a crucial 84 against Australia in the semifinal.

Rohit, meanwhile, has scored 283 runs in eight IPL matches , including two half-centuries, despite managing a recurring hamstring injury. Since returning, he has largely featured as an impact player for Mumbai Indians.

Both Kohli and Rohit have been named in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan beginning June 14, although Rohit’s participation remains subject to fitness clearance.

While speculation over their participation in the 2027 World Cup continues to grow, BCCI sources have indicated that selectors will assess both players closer to the tournament based on form, fitness and workload management . For now, however, India’s legendary duo appear determined to keep the dream alive.
