A Hyderabad Police Sub-Inspector has been suspended after a video showing his minor granddaughter driving a car on a public road went viral on social media, prompting widespread criticism over road safety violations and the conduct expected from a law enforcement officer.

The incident, which took place within the Narsingi Police Station limits on the outskirts of Hyderabad, showed Sub-Inspector Pujari Tirupati sitting in the front passenger seat while the young girl steered the vehicle. The video quickly drew public attention, with many questioning how a serving police officer could permit a minor to drive on a public road despite strict traffic laws prohibiting underage driving.

The footage also captured local residents confronting the officer over the apparent violation of road safety norms and Motor Vehicles Act provisions. During the exchange, the child was heard saying, "My grandfather is an SI," while the officer attempted to defend his actions by claiming that the vehicle was an automatic car and that he remained in control throughout the drive. However, following persistent objections from the bystanders, he eventually took over the driver's seat.

A senior police official confirmed that a case had been registered in connection with the incident and that the vehicle involved had been seized for further investigation.

Taking serious note of the viral video, Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand directed the Hyderabad Police Commissioner to immediately suspend the officer and initiate a departmental inquiry. In a post on X , the DGP stressed that police personnel are expected to uphold the law and set an example for the public, adding that irresponsible behaviour by members of the force would not be tolerated.

Acting on the directive, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar issued orders placing SI Pujari Tirupati under immediate suspension. An official statement said the disciplinary action was taken for violating road safety regulations and encouraging a minor to operate a motor vehicle , both of which amount to serious misconduct.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Traffic Police registered a criminal case against the officer under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 180 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act , which deal with acts endangering public safety, permitting an unauthorised person to drive, and dangerous driving-related violations. The investigation is currently underway.

The episode has once again highlighted the risks associated with underage driving . Under Indian traffic laws, minors are prohibited from driving motor vehicles on public roads, and guardians or vehicle owners who knowingly allow such violations can face criminal as well as departmental action. Authorities have repeatedly urged parents and guardians not to permit children behind the wheel, warning that even a brief lapse can have serious consequences for public safety.
