Violence Erupts at JNU After Student Protest, Administration Warns of Strict Action

A late-night protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) escalated into violence in the early hours of Monday, leaving several students injured and prompting the administration to warn of strict disciplinary and legal action against those involved.

Why the Protest Began

The agitation was led by the Left-backed Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), which organised a march titled Samta Juloos. The protest centred on demands for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit and the revocation of a rustication order against certain students.

Protesters accused the university administration of failing to engage in dialogue over disciplinary actions and governance concerns, arguing that student voices were being ignored in decision-making processes.

How the Situation Turned Violent

According to university officials, tensions rose after some protesters allegedly locked academic buildings and entered the central library, where they were accused of pressuring students to join the demonstration. This reportedly triggered confrontations between rival student groups.

The Right-leaning Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that students studying in reading rooms were attacked and confined, claiming masked individuals carrying sticks and stones created panic on campus.

On the other hand, Left-aligned student leaders accused ABVP members of confronting march participants and provoking clashes, saying the administration failed to prevent the confrontation.

Groups Involved in the Clash

The violence primarily involved supporters of the Left-aligned JNUSU , which organised the protest, and the ABVP , a Right-leaning student organisation.

Both sides blamed each other for stone-pelting and assault, reflecting the long-standing ideological rivalry that often shapes student politics at the university.

Administration’s Response

In an official statement, the university said it had taken “very serious cognisance” of the incident and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the academic environment. Authorities warned that any acts of intimidation, violence, or disruption would invite strict action under university regulations and applicable law.

The administration urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and said classes and academic activities were continuing as scheduled, while an inquiry into the incident is expected to determine responsibility and further action
