Vinesh’s Comeback Dream Ends in Heartbreak, Loses to Meenakshi in Asian Games Trial Semifinal
For a few hours on Saturday, it felt as though Indian wrestling was witnessing the beginning of a remarkable comeback story. The crowd cheered every move, supporters rallied behind her, and hopes of a triumphant return grew with every bout. But by evening, Vinesh Phogat's comeback dream had come to a painful halt, as she lost 4-6 to Meenakshi Goyat in the 53kg semifinals of the Asian Games selection trials.
The tournament marked Vinesh's first competitive appearance since the heartbreak of the Paris Olympics , where she was disqualified from the women's 50kg final after being found overweight by just 100 grams . Saturday's trials were therefore much more than a selection event. They were a test of resilience, determination and her desire to remain among India's elite wrestlers.
The day began amid controversy. During the official weigh-in, Vinesh was initially told she could only compete in the 50kg category, the division in which she had contested her recent international events. She strongly objected, alleging unfair treatment and insisting on participating in the 53kg division. Following intervention from Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh , she was eventually allowed to compete.
Once on the mat, Vinesh showed glimpses of the champion who has inspired a generation of Indian wrestlers. She opened with a convincing 7-1 win over Jyoti before surviving a dramatic quarterfinal against Nishu Kumari .
The quarterfinal proved to be the contest of the day. Nishu surged ahead early and pushed Vinesh to the brink of elimination. Multiple stoppages, scoring disputes and challenges added to the tension. Vinesh fought back brilliantly, eventually edging a thrilling 7-6 victory after a fiercely contested battle.
However, the physically and emotionally draining encounter appeared to take its toll. Against Asian Championship silver medallist Meenakshi Goyat , Vinesh struggled to maintain the same intensity and ultimately fell short, ending her hopes of an immediate return to the national team.
Despite the setback, the former world medallist remained defiant. Earlier in the day, she had declared that she plans to wrestle for at least two more years. The comeback may have suffered a setback, but Vinesh Phogat's determination remains unbroken , ensuring that her journey in the sport is far from over.
