In a moment that blends resilience with controversy, Vinesh Phogat is back in the spotlight, not just for her return to competition, but for the noise surrounding it.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday pushed back against the star wrestler’s claims that she was being blocked from entering the upcoming National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda. According to the federation, there was “no need to make noise” , insisting her registration had already been processed and that technical glitches, not bias, caused the delay.

Vinesh, however, had earlier taken to social media, expressing frustration over a closed registration link. By Tuesday morning, she confirmed her entry was successfully completed, thanking supporters and marking her return after nearly 20 months away from competitive wrestling .

WFI officials maintained that several wrestlers faced similar portal issues and that alternative options, including in-person submission, were always open. Sources even claimed her entry had been processed late Monday night, highlighting a disconnect between the federation’s records and the wrestler’s experience.

The upcoming tournament in Gonda, scheduled from May 10 to 12 , carries more weight than just rankings. For Vinesh, competing in the 57kg category , it represents a deeply personal comeback, her first appearance since the heartbreak of disqualification at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to being overweight.

Her journey since then has been anything but ordinary. From announcing retirement to reversing that decision, from stepping into motherhood to entering politics as an MLA in Haryana, Vinesh’s life has evolved beyond the mat. Yet, her ambition remains firmly anchored to the sport, with eyes now set on the Asian Games and the 2028 Olympics .

WFI President Sanjay Singh emphasized the federation’s commitment to athletes, stating that their focus is on creating an environment where wrestlers can perform without hurdles.

But as Vinesh prepares to step back onto the mat, one thing is clear — her return is not just about competition. It’s about reclaiming rhythm, rewriting narrative, and reminding the world that champions don’t fade quietly.
