Vikram Solar Inaugurates 6 GW Solar Module Plant in Tamil Nadu
Vikram Solar has strengthened its manufacturing footprint in Tamil Nadu with the inauguration of a 6-gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic module manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district, marking a major step in the company’s plans to build an integrated domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay virtually inaugurated the facility on Friday as part of a state-level programme held in Chennai. Located within a larger 186-acre greenfield campus, the facility is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 skilled professionals in the region. With the new production line, Vikram Solar’s total solar PV module manufacturing capacity has risen to 15.5 GW annually.
The Gangaikondan plant is designed as a next-generation smart manufacturing facility, incorporating advanced automation and digital systems for production monitoring, quality inspection, traceability and material handling. Its first products are Hypersol N-Type TOPCon G12R modules, offering 615–640 Wp of rated power and module efficiency of up to 23.69%.
The facility is also central to Vikram Solar’s strategy of backward integration. The company plans to progressively develop the campus to house module, cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing, bringing key stages of the solar value chain together. This is expected to strengthen supply-chain resilience, improve quality control, reduce logistics and ancillary costs and increase domestic value addition.
As part of the roadmap, Vikram Solar plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY27, add another 3 GW by FY28, and develop 12 GW of wafer and ingot capacity by FY29-30. In May, the company approved ₹3,726 crore in capital expenditure for a 6 GW backward-integrated wafer and ingot facility at Gangaikondan by FY29, forming the first phase of a broader 12 GW roadmap.
The expansion builds on Vikram Solar’s existing manufacturing base of 9.5 GW across West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, including its 5 GW Vallam facility. The company has also crossed 10 GW in cumulative global module deployments, with products deployed across 39 countries. It is simultaneously expanding into energy storage through VSL Powerhive, which plans a 5 GWh battery energy storage system facility by FY27.
The Gangaikondan project therefore represents more than a capacity addition, positioning Tirunelveli and Tamil Nadu as important hubs for India’s clean-energy manufacturing push while supporting greater domestic production and a more resilient solar supply chain.
