Vikram Doraiswami Reaches Shanghai to Take Charge as India’s Ambassador to China
India’s new Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami arrived in Shanghai on Saturday to formally begin his diplomatic posting, as both countries continue cautious steps towards stabilising ties following years of strained relations.
He was received by Indian Consul General in Shanghai Pratik Mathur and other officials. The 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer is expected to move to Beijing on Sunday, where he will assume charge as India’s top envoy to China, succeeding Pradeep Kumar Rawat.
Doraiswami previously served as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and is regarded as a seasoned China expert, having earlier been posted in Hong Kong and Beijing and fluent in Mandarin. His appointment in March drew attention in Chinese official and strategic circles.
China’s Foreign Ministry had earlier welcomed his appointment, with spokesperson Lin Jian noting that he had adopted a Chinese name, Wei Jiameng , which scholars interpret as meaning an “auspicious ally” or one who builds constructive partnerships, reflecting diplomatic symbolism around his posting.
Chinese officials also expressed hope that he would play a positive role in improving bilateral relations, describing diplomatic envoys as key bridges between the two countries.
Doraiswami’s arrival comes as India and China gradually work to normalise ties strained after the 2020 eastern Ladakh military standoff , with ongoing efforts to restore visas, direct flights, and broader diplomatic engagement . His posting is seen as part of a broader attempt to rebuild structured dialogue and stabilise relations.
