Vijay’s TVK Joining INDIA Bloc Will Boost Opposition Unity in Tamil Nadu: Tagore
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president B Manickam Tagore on Saturday said the entry of actor-politician Vijay-led TVK into the INDIA bloc would significantly strengthen the anti-BJP opposition front in the state.
Welcoming TVK’s inclusion in the opposition alliance, Tagore described it as a “historic day” for opposition consolidation and said the development would make the political battle against the BJP-led Centre more compelling in Tamil Nadu.
“The INDIA bloc, particularly in Tamil Nadu, is strengthened by the entry of TVK,” Tagore told reporters after a multi-party coordination meeting at the TNCC headquarters, Sathyamurthy Bhavan.
He said the alliance’s fight against the RSS-BJP, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, would gain further momentum with TVK joining the opposition platform.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Congress, TVK, CPI(M), CPI, VCK, MDMK and IUML.
Tagore also announced that alliance constituents would organise district-level demonstrations on October 13 and 14 across Tamil Nadu, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protests will be followed by a major demonstration on October 15, featuring top leaders of all seven constituent parties from the region. Separately, INDIA bloc MPs are scheduled to march to the Election Commission of India headquarters in New Delhi on October 6 as part of a nationwide campaign against the poll body.
Asked about the DMK’s absence from the coordination meeting, Tagore dismissed suggestions of differences within the alliance. He said the INDIA bloc remained an open platform for political forces opposing the BJP-led Centre.
MDMK chief Vaiko said the meeting focused on pressing national issues, including concerns surrounding the Election Commission’s SIR exercise.
