Vijayanand Urges Advance Coal Stocking to Avoid Summer Power Shortages in AP

The AP state government has asked power utilities to step up preparedness to handle the expected surge in electricity demand during the upcoming summer season . Energy Department Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand called for a well-coordinated and forward-looking action plan to ensure uninterrupted supply .

In view of global uncertainties surrounding coal imports , he directed officials to build sufficient coal stockpiles in advance to avoid any disruption in power generation. Early planning, he said, would be crucial to maintaining stability during high-demand periods.

At a review meeting on Tuesday, Vijayanand highlighted that power consumption rises significantly in summer and stressed the need for seamless coordination with ports and the railways to guarantee steady coal supply to thermal plants. He also instructed that all generating units must operate at full capacity during peak hours to safeguard grid stability .

The Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) has been tasked with estimating coal requirements for key facilities, including the Krishnapatnam Thermal Power Plant, and quickly finalizing supply schedules to ensure continuous generation throughout the season.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Vijayanand said efforts are focused on lowering production costs and providing electricity to consumers at affordable rates , in line with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s vision. Officials were encouraged to identify ways to optimize both procurement and generation expenses.

He also cautioned that the upcoming monsoon may bring below-normal rainfall, potentially increasing dependence on thermal power. In this backdrop, he stressed the importance of efficient resource management and strategic planning to meet demand while maintaining grid reliability.
