Vijay Thalapathy’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ release delayed amid CBFC certification, Madras HC review

The release of actor-politician Vijay’s highly anticipated big-budget film Jana Nayagan has been postponed, as the movie awaits clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and a pending order from the Madras High Court. Originally scheduled for January 9 , the film cannot hit theatres until both the certification process and the judicial review are completed.

Production house KVN Productions expressed regret over the delay, acknowledging the excitement surrounding the project among fans and industry stakeholders. “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan , eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control,” the production house said in a statement, adding that a new release date will be announced at the earliest.

The postponement comes amid ongoing legal proceedings related to the film’s certification. The Madras High Court recently reserved its order on a petition seeking directions to the CBFC to grant the movie a ‘UA 16+’ certificate. According to sources familiar with the process, the CBFC has not yet issued a censor certificate, following its statutory guidelines under the Cinematograph Act. Officials have maintained before the court that certification decisions must be independent and cannot be expedited, especially when judicial scrutiny is involved. Until the court delivers its ruling, no final cut or certification category can be confirmed.

The delay has sparked wider discussion, given Vijay’s recent political moves. The actor, who heads the fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has announced that his party will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for March-April. This has led to speculation in political and film circles about whether Jana Nayagan carries political messaging that could influence voters .

Sources close to the production, however, insist that Jana Nayagan is primarily a commercial entertainer, blending action and drama in Vijay’s trademark style rather than presenting a direct political narrative. While the film reportedly explores themes of leadership, justice, and social responsibility common in mainstream Tamil cinema the makers have consistently refrained from positioning it as a campaign-oriented or overtly political movie.

With the High Court’s order awaited and CBFC certification pending, the film’s release timeline remains uncertain , even as public and political interest around the project continues to build.
