Vijay Shah Apologises Again as Court Deadline Nears in Col. Qureshi Case

Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah has once again apologised for his controversial remarks about Army officer Colonel Sofia Qureshi , as a court-linked deadline on possible prosecution approaches. Shah said his comments, made last year during a public speech, were spoken in a moment of “patriotic excitement” and did not reflect his true feelings. He maintained that he never intended to insult a woman officer , the Indian Army , or any section of society, and described the episode as a painful mistake for which he has repeatedly sought forgiveness.

The controversy began in May last year when a video of Shah’s speech at a public event in Indore district went viral on social media. In that speech, he made objectionable remarks referring to Col. Qureshi, who had gained national visibility after briefing the media on Operation Sindoor , India’s military action targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. The clip triggered widespread criticism, with many viewing the comments as disrespectful to a serving Army officer and, by extension, the armed forces.

Legal proceedings followed swiftly. The Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognisance of the remarks, termed the language derogatory and indecent , and directed police to register an FIR against the minister. Acting on the order, police filed a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita . The matter later reached the Supreme Court of India , which on January 19 asked the state government to decide within two weeks whether to grant sanction to prosecute Shah, a procedural requirement often needed before prosecuting a serving public official.

With the deadline nearing, political pressure has intensified. Opposition parties, particularly the Congress , have demanded Shah’s resignation or removal from the cabinet, arguing that his continuation in office undermines accountability and respect for the armed forces. The case has therefore evolved beyond a single statement into a broader legal and political issue, testing how the state government responds to judicial directions and public sentiment.

In his latest statement, Shah said he had introspected and learned a lesson about the importance of maintaining decorum and sensitivity in public life. He accepted responsibility for his words and promised to exercise greater restraint in the future, assuring that such a mistake would not be repeated. As the state government prepares its decision on prosecution sanction, the episode remains closely watched for its outcome and its impact on political discourse and civil–military sensitivities.
