Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja Set for Hollywood Remake

Vijay Sethupathi's 2024 Tamil crime thriller Maharaja is set for a Hollywood remake after attracting international attention, particularly following its strong performance in China.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram has confirmed that a Hollywood agency approached the makers for the remake rights after the film's success in China, where it has reportedly earned ₹91.65 crore at the box office, besides performing well on OTT platforms. The agency is now working to set up the project with an A-list Hollywood actor, with production likely to begin in 2027.

There has been considerable speculation that Matthew McConaughey could headline the English-language adaptation and take on the role played by Vijay Sethupathi. However, his casting has not been confirmed. Sundaram said McConaughey could be among the actors being approached, while stressing that the Hollywood agency would announce the final cast and studio details.

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja follows a barber who approaches the police over a missing dustbin, only for the apparently simple complaint to unravel into a much darker and twist-filled story. Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas and Natarajan Subramaniam were also part of the cast.

The film, released in India on June 14, 2024, received strong critical and audience response for its screenplay, nonlinear narrative and performances. It later made a major impact in China after releasing there on November 29, 2024, with reports noting its release across more than 40,000 screens.

The Hollywood development comes after Maharaja had already attracted interest for a Hindi adaptation, with Aamir Khan Productions acquiring the Hindi remake rights and Aamir Khan reported to be considering the lead role.

The latest Hollywood deal could give the Tamil thriller another international platform, although details about the remake's director, studio, screenplay and final cast are yet to be officially announced.
