Vijay Sethupathi’s 'Baththa' Locks OTT Release Date, To Stream In Five Languages On Netflix
Vijay Sethupathi’s 'Baththa', a Tamil action-comedy drama that earned praise from critics and audiences but delivered a less encouraging box-office performance than expected, is heading to OTT. The film will premiere on Netflix on October 29, 2026, giving viewers another opportunity to watch the entertainer, which combines gangster drama, humour and emotional storytelling.
The streaming platform has confirmed that 'Baththa' will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam. Its multilingual release could help the film reach audiences beyond Tamil-speaking regions and attract viewers who missed its theatrical run. The digital premiere comes nearly a month after the film opened in cinemas on October 1.
Written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film is set in Madras in 1986. Vijay Sethupathi plays Baththavachalam, popularly known as Baththa, a feared local gangster whose life takes an unexpected turn when an eight-year-old boy accidentally locks him inside a school restroom.
The unusual situation forces the gangster to confront his vulnerabilities, while his growing connection with the young boy gradually changes his outlook on life and his relationships with his family. The film moves beyond conventional gangster drama by combining comedy with emotional moments and exploring the softer side of a man known for intimidating others.
The cast also features Master Sai Prithviraj, Lijomol Jose, Santhy Balachandran and Baby Sahasra Shree. Sai Prithviraj has received particular appreciation for his performance. The film's music and background score have been composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
Produced by Murad Khetani, Atlee, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare, the film is backed by Cine1 Studios, A for Apple Studios and Star Studio18, with Atlee among its presenters.
Despite the positive response to its storytelling and performances, the film's theatrical collections were reportedly less encouraging than expected. Reports have also highlighted online piracy, with clips from the film circulating widely. Its Netflix premiere could give 'Baththa' a fresh opportunity to find a wider audience, although its performance on the streaming platform remains to be seen.
