At the much awaited audio launch of his film Jana Nayagan in Malaysia, actor politician Vijay turned the evening into an emotional spectacle as he announced his decision to step away from cinema to stand up for the fans who gave him everything, including a symbolic kottai . In Tamil, kottai means a fort and represents both a personal stronghold and Fort St George, the seat of power in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking with visible emotion, Vijay reflected on his journey, saying he entered the cinema believing he was building a small sand house, but his fans built him a palace and even a fort. For the supporters who sacrificed everything for him, he said he was ready to sacrifice the cinema itself, drawing thunderous applause from the packed stadium.

The grand event, titled Thalapathy Thiruvizha , was held on December 27 at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur and drew close to one lakh fans, earning a place in the Malaysian Book of Records for the largest gathering at an audio launch. Despite rain delays, fans filled the venue, with many travelling from Europe, the United States and across Asia, turning the night into a global celebration of Vijay’s stardom. He had earlier received a traditional cultural welcome upon arriving in Malaysia, setting the festive tone well before the show began.

Thanking Malaysian fans in particular, Vijay delivered a statement that instantly set off cheers and speculation. “ If you want to succeed in life, you may not need friends, but you need a strong enemy. Only when there’s a strong enemy, do you become stronger. So, in 2026, history will repeat. Let us be ready to welcome it for the people, ” he said, hinting at the political road ahead. While chants linked to his political party briefly echoed in the crowd, Vijay gently signalled restraint, respecting the strict no politics condition imposed by local authorities.

The five to six hour extravaganza unfolded with music, memories and emotion. Singers Tippu, Anuradha Sriram and Saindhavi electrified the stage, building on the popularity of songs like Thalapathy Kacheri and Oru Pere Varalaaru. A surprise appearance by Vijay’s mother Shobha deeply moved fans, adding a personal touch to the spectacle. Even when rain interrupted the programme, organisers ensured the show went on seamlessly.

Industry veterans spoke with visible emotion about their bond with the star. Veteran actor Nasser broke down while thanking Vijay for supporting his son during a difficult phase and for helping with the construction of the Nadigar Sangam building. Quoting Vijay’s iconic Pokkiri dialogue “Oru thadava mudivu pannita”, Nasser said the actor truly lives by his words but urged him to reconsider retirement, calling him critic proof and irreplaceable for fans and the industry.

Actor Pooja Hegde , Vijay’s co-star in Jana Nayagan, described him as professional, humble and grounded, expressing sadness that this could be their final film together. She fondly recalled Beast and the massive success of Arabic Kuthu, thanking fans for their unwavering love. Music director Anirudh Ravichander paid tribute with a 45 minute medley of Vijay’s biggest hits, while directors Atlee, Nelson and Lokesh Kanagaraj shared personal anecdotes highlighting his discipline and influence. Director H Vinoth also dismissed remake rumours, stressing the film’s originality.

Vijay’s declaration once again revived questions about whether he is completely quitting cinema or only stepping back. Earlier, he had said he would stop acting after fulfilling his existing commitments, including films linked to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Jana Nayagan, releasing after those announcements, appears to be part of that commitment rather than a fresh extension of his film career. So far, Vijay has not clearly stated that he will never return to cinema, suggesting that while his focus is firmly on politics now, a comeback after electoral outcomes remains unconfirmed.

The apolitical gathering highlighted Vijay’s enduring global pull three years after his last visit to Malaysia. Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Menon, Priyamani and Naren, and is set for a worldwide Pongal release on January 9, 2026, clashing with Prabhas’ The Raja Saab and Red Giant Movies’ Parasakthi starring Sivakarthikeyan. The audio launch will be telecast on Zee Tamil on January 4, 2026, allowing fans worldwide to relive a night that felt like both a celebration and a farewell.
