Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the valour of the Indian Armed Forces on Vijay Diwas , marking the historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak war that led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh .
In his message, the Prime Minister said the nation remembers the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India’s decisive victory in 1971. He noted that their steadfast resolve and selfless service protected the nation and etched a moment of pride in India’s history, adding that Vijay Diwas stands as a salute to their unmatched spirit, which continues to inspire generations.

, observed annually on December 16 , commemorates the day when the Pakistani Army surrendered unconditionally to Indian forces in Dhaka. Around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers , led by General A A K Niazi , laid down their arms, one of the largest military surrenders since World War II . The victory came after a swift and decisive campaign showcasing joint operations of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
Paying homage to the armed forces, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described the 1971 triumph as a testament to India’s military strength, strategic clarity and humanitarian commitment. Party leaders said the victory reaffirmed India’s role as a responsible regional power and underscored the supreme sacrifice of soldiers who fought for freedom and justice.
The Indian National Congress (INC) also marked the occasion by remembering the soldiers who fought the war and the leadership under which the conflict was waged. The party said Vijay Diwas symbolises India’s commitment to democracy and human dignity, and saluted the armed forces for securing freedom for millions through courage and discipline.
