
Vietnamese Deputy Minister meets Indian Minority Affairs Secretary, underscores civilisational ties
H.E. Mr. Y. Thong, Deputy Minister of Vietnam’s Ministry of Ethnic & Religious Affairs, accompanied by a delegation , met Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Minority Affairs. The discussion highlighted enduring ties between the two nations, reflecting historical, cultural, spiritual, and strategic links.
Dr. Kumar welcomed the dignitary, appreciating Vietnam’s participation in the Bharat Tribes Festival 2026 and reaffirming Vietnam’s role in India’s Act East Policy . He emphasised the deep civilisational roots connecting the countries, including their shared Buddhist heritage , which continues to strengthen people-to-people bonds. He also praised Vietnam’s reverence during the 2025 public exposition of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from Sarnath, which attracted millions and reflected a shared spiritual legacy.
Both sides marked the 10th anniversary of the India–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership , noting it as a milestone in bilateral relations. They discussed cultural and heritage initiatives planned throughout the year and explored ways to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
India and Vietnam’s engagement spans economic, educational, tourism, and academic areas. Bilateral trade has grown steadily, with both countries acting as major partners in each other’s Southeast Asian networks. Enhanced flight connectivity, simplified visa regimes, and joint academic and cultural programmes have strengthened people-to-people links.
The meeting, held in a cordial atmosphere, reflected mutual trust and friendship. The Ministry of Minority Affairs reiterated its commitment to promoting minority welfare through robust schemes, evidence-based policies, and continuous outreach, reinforcing India’s dedication to inclusive growth while deepening ties with Vietnam through cultural heritage and strategic partnership.
