Veteran sports administrator N.K. Bhatia no more

Delhi football lost one of its most respected and beloved figures on Saturday as veteran administrator N.K. Bhatia passed away at the age of 76 after a prolonged illness. Known for his decades-long service to the sport, Bhatia’s passing marks the end of an era for football in the national capital.

Bhatia, who had been battling age-related ailments, was admitted to the intensive care unit of a city hospital before he breathed his last. A stalwart of Delhi football since the 1970s, he served in multiple capacities including vice-president of Football Delhi, secretary, and treasurer of the erstwhile Delhi Soccer Association (DSA). He also represented Delhi football at All India Football Federation (AIFF) meetings and contributed as a member of several AIFF standing committees.

Under his leadership, Delhi hosted several national and international tournaments, which strengthened the city’s football ecosystem. Beyond administration, Bhatia was widely admired for his dedication, discipline, and personal warmth. He maintained a close relationship with sports journalists, often ensuring that match details and press notes were delivered on time, sometimes personally visiting newspaper offices to do so.

Former AIFF Secretary General and Football Delhi President Shaji Prabhakaran paid tribute to Bhatia, describing him as “a pillar of support and guidance.” He added, “It was an honour to work alongside him. Mr. Bhatia was not only an administrator but also a kind-hearted man who loved to host his friends and colleagues, whether at home or in the stadium.”

With his passing, Delhi football loses a mentor, organizer, and friend to many. His legacy will continue to inspire administrators and players who share his vision for the growth of the game in the capital.
