
Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa Dies at 68’ film fraternity pays tribute
Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa , known for his powerful performances in Nepali cinema and his memorable roles in Indian films and web series such as Mary Kom and The Family Man , passed away on Sunday at the age of 68 . Doctors have suspected cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
According to Nepalese daily The Kathmandu Post , Thapa was found unconscious at his apartment in Shankhamul, Kathmandu , and was rushed to Norvic Hospital in Thapathali. He, however, died during treatment, plunging the Nepali film industry into mourning.
A respected name in Nepal’s film fraternity, Sunil Thapa was regarded as one of the country’s finest actors, known for his intense screen presence and nuanced portrayals. With a career spanning several decades, he played a significant role in shaping contemporary Nepali cinema and was a recipient of Nepal’s National Film Award .
Thapa also gained recognition among Indian audiences through his performance in Priyanka Chopra Jonas-starrer Mary Kom (2014) and later through the popular Amazon Prime Video series * The Family Man *, where his understated yet impactful acting drew appreciation. His cross-border work helped introduce Nepali acting talent to a wider international audience.
Condolences poured in from across the Indian film industry following news of his death. Actor Manoj Bajpayee , his co-star in The Family Man , paid tribute to Thapa, remembering him as a sincere performer and a warm human being. Priyanka Chopra Jonas also expressed grief, recalling their collaboration in Mary Kom and praising his dedication to the craft.
