Veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai is facing criticism for his recent comments on the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh. Sardesai cautioned against generalising the attacks as targeting Hindus alone, highlighting that some Muslims’ homes were also affected. He stressed the importance of India upholding its secular image in reporting on such incidents.

Since August 2024, over 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities, including killings, arson, and recent lynchings, have been reported in Bangladesh . The surge in attacks has triggered diplomatic concern in India, prompting the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to issue strong condemnations and call for justice for the victims. India has also summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner multiple times to express concern over the safety of minorities. Protests in Indian cities, including New Delhi and Kolkata, outside Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions have further added to tensions.

Critics accused Sardesai of downplaying Hindu suffering and creating a false equivalence by pointing out Muslim victims. They argue that his emphasis on nuance seemed insensitive in the context of widespread attacks on Hindus. Supporters, however, praised him for promoting careful reporting and highlighting the complexities of the post-revolution chaos in Bangladesh.

The ongoing violence and subsequent diplomatic exchanges have strained India–Bangladesh relations , with both sides recalling or summoning diplomats and seeking assurances for minority protection. Analysts warn that continued unrest could have broader regional implications and affect bilateral cooperation in the future.
