Veteran Hockey Journalist S Thyagarajan dies at 85, leaves enduring legacy

Veteran Indian sports journalist S Thyagarajan , widely regarded as one of the finest voices in hockey writing , passed away on Monday following age-related ailments . He was 85. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. His last rites were performed in Chennai on the same day.

Thyagarajan, fondly known as “Thyagu”, had an illustrious career spanning over five decades , during which he became synonymous with insightful and authoritative coverage of Indian hockey . He began his journalistic journey with The Indian Express in 1961 before joining The Hindu in 1962, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 2013 .

Over the years, he reported from some of the biggest global sporting events, including six Olympic Games , nine Asian Games , and nine Hockey World Cups , in addition to covering numerous national tournaments. His deep understanding of the sport and elegant writing style earned him immense respect both in India and internationally.

Beyond reporting, Thyagarajan also played a significant role in shaping sports journalism in India . He served on media and communications committees of the International Hockey Federation and the Asian Hockey Federation. He was a former president of the Sports Journalists Federation of India and the Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists’ Association, contributing to the development and mentoring of young journalists .

In recognition of his outstanding contribution , he was felicitated by the Sports Journalists Federation of India in October 2024 . Former India captain and 1980 Olympic gold medallist Vasudevan Baskaran expressed deep sorrow, recalling Thyagarajan’s unwavering support throughout his career. “His dedication, love and knowledge of the sport were impeccable . His contribution to Indian hockey was immense,” he said.

Senior journalist and hockey historian K Arumugam described him as a rare, all-round journalist and a gifted storyteller whose work was respected globally. Echoing similar sentiments, veteran journalist S Sabanayakan termed his passing an “irreparable loss” to sports journalism, highlighting his role in mentoring generations of reporters .

The Sports Journalists Federation of India also condoled his demise, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire the fraternity for years to come.
