Verstappen chases third straight win in Singapore

Max Verstappen is gearing up to turn up the heat literally and figuratively at the Singapore Grand Prix as the reigning Formula 1 champion looks to tighten his grip on the title race. Starting from second on the grid, Verstappen has a clear opportunity to extend his winning streak to three and increase the pressure on young rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

George Russell will lead the grid for Mercedes after a stellar qualifying session that saw him edge out Verstappen by a slim margin. Behind them, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will start third, with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli in fourth and Lando Norris in fifth. The qualifying results suggest McLaren could struggle to match Red Bull and Mercedes on the high-downforce Marina Bay street circuit.

Verstappen, who triumphed in Italy and Azerbaijan, expressed frustration after missing out on pole, claiming Norris hindered his flying lap by “just cruising” ahead of him. Still, the Dutchman remains confident of a strong race pace, having last achieved a three-race winning streak during the early part of the 2024 season.

For Russell, Sunday’s race offers a shot at redemption. The Briton has never stood on the podium in Singapore and even crashed during practice, limiting his long-run data. “There are still plenty of unknowns,” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted, referring to the unpredictable street circuit and hot conditions.

Adding to the challenge, the Singapore GP has become the first race officially classified as a “heat hazard” under the FIA’s new safety regulations. Drivers will face sweltering temperatures and high humidity, with some opting for cooling vests though Verstappen, true to his tough-guy image, has chosen to go without.
