Venezuela to Release 300 Detainees as Pressure Mounts Over Political Prisoners

Venezuela’s government will release 300 detainees this week in what officials describe as a humanitarian measure, amid growing scrutiny over alleged political imprisonments and recent deaths linked to the country’s prison system.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez announced that the releases will take place between May 18 and May 22 under Venezuela’s new amnesty law , introduced after the dramatic January 2026 US intervention that led to the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro.

Authorities said the measure will prioritise prisoners over 60 and 70 years old, people with chronic illnesses, minors, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and detainees jailed for decades. Among those expected to be freed are three former police officers imprisoned since 2003 .

Human rights organisations, including Foro Penal, argue that many of the detainees are political prisoners and accuse the government of carrying out selective and slow releases. While officials claim hundreds have already been freed this year, watchdog groups say the confirmed numbers remain far lower.

The announcement comes as acting President Delcy Rodríguez faces criticism following the revelation that detainee Víctor Hugo Quero died in custody months ago without his family being informed. Quero’s 82-year-old mother, Carmen Navas, died days after authorities finally disclosed his death, sparking protests by students and activists in Caracas.

The United Nations and international rights groups have urged Venezuela to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of all political detainees.

US President Donald Trump also renewed pressure on Caracas, promising Washington would secure the release of every remaining political prisoner in Venezuela.
