The United States’ military operation in Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores , has sharply divided global opinion, with major powers condemning the action, some Western leaders welcoming it, and India urging restraint while issuing a travel advisory for its citizens.

The operation in Caracas was followed by Maduro’s transfer to New York to face drug trafficking-related charges. Venezuela has since declared a national emergency, citing threats to sovereignty and internal stability.

Russia condemns ‘armed aggression’

Russia issued one of the strongest official responses, describing the US action as an “act of armed aggression” against a sovereign state. In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the justifications offered by Washington were “untenable” and called for preventing further escalation through dialogue. Moscow reaffirmed support for Venezuela’s right to determine its own future without external interference and backed calls for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council .

West welcomes the development

Several Western leaders welcomed the developments. Emmanuel Macron said the Venezuelan people had been freed from dictatorship and stressed that the forthcoming transition must be peaceful, democratic and reflect the will of the people. He also said France was coordinating with regional partners and remained vigilant to ensure the safety of French nationals.

Leaders aligned with Washington, including Argentina’s President Javier Milei , also expressed support, while the European Union urged restraint and respect for international law.

US President Donald Trump described the operation as “extremely successful” and said the United States would temporarily administer Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” of power takes place.

India’s position and travel advisory

India expressed “deep concern” over the developments and said it was closely monitoring the evolving situation. The Ministry of External Affairs called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and reaffirmed support for the well-being of the Venezuelan people.

New Delhi also issued a travel advisory , urging Indian nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela and advising those already in the country to exercise extreme caution and remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.

Political reactions in India

The Indian National Congress expressed grave concern, saying settled principles of international law cannot be violated unilaterally. Left parties condemned the US action as a violation of the UN Charter and accused Washington of pursuing control over Venezuela’s oil resources.

With Venezuela under emergency rule, its leadership in US custody and global diplomatic fault lines widening, the crisis has exposed deep divisions between global powers over sovereignty, intervention and the future of the oil-rich South American nation.
