Velmurugan’s TVK quits DMK alliance over ‘Neglect’ claims

The Tamilaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), an ally of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), on Sunday announced its exit from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), alleging neglect and a “ big brother attitude ” by the dominant party.

Party founder T. Velmurugan , who represents the Panruti Assembly constituency in Cuddalore district , said the decision was taken after repeated grievances went unaddressed. He claimed that despite assurances during seat-sharing talks that his party would be allotted one seat in the upcoming Assembly elections, their concerns particularly those related to social justice were sidelined.

“We were told that when other parties are not placing demands, why are we insisting on them,” Velmurugan said, adding that the DMK had failed to act on even some of the issues raised by his party.

The Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu is led by the DMK and includes key partners such as the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, among others. In such alliances, the DMK contests the maximum number of seats , while smaller allies like TVK are allocated the minimum , often limited to one or a few constituencies .

Velmurugan ruled out joining the National Democratic Alliance ( NDA ) and indicated that discussions were underway to explore a new alliance ahead of the polls.

The exit of TVK, though a smaller partner, signals emerging strains within the DMK-led coalition as Assembly elections approach .
