Velavan Senthilkumar Storms Into Czech Open Final With Straight-Game Victory
Indian squash player Velavan Senthilkumar stormed into the final of the USD 35,000 PSA Czech Open in Brno after defeating higher-ranked French opponent Auguste Dussourd in straight games in the semifinals.
The fourth-seeded Indian, ranked 42nd in the world, registered a convincing 11-7, 12-10, 11-1 victory over world No. 32 Dussourd to secure his place in the title clash. Despite facing a higher-ranked opponent, Senthilkumar produced a strong performance, particularly in the third game, which he dominated 11-1.
The 28-year-old had earlier displayed impressive form throughout the tournament. He defeated eighth seed and world No. 64 Jeremias Azana of Argentina 11-3, 11-8, 11-7 in the quarterfinals. Before that, he overcame Brazil's Diego Gobbi 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 in the second round after receiving a bye in the opening round.
Senthilkumar's victory over Dussourd marked another significant step in his campaign, as he continued to challenge opponents ranked above him in the tournament.
The Indian will now face top seed Greg Lobban of Scotland, who is ranked 31st in the world, in the final. The title clash presents Senthilkumar with an opportunity to add another international achievement to his growing career.
The Indian's impressive run also comes after his contribution to the country's campaign at last month's Asian Games in Japan, where he won a mixed team bronze medal.
With victories over several higher-ranked players, Senthilkumar will look to maintain his momentum and secure the Czech Open title against the experienced Scottish opponent.
