A major political controversy erupted in Bihar after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was seen pulling the veil of a woman doctor during a government function in Patna, drawing sharp criticism from Opposition parties, leaders across states, and public figures. The incident occurred at a ceremony where appointment letters were distributed to 1,283 practitioners trained in Ayurveda, Yoga and Homeopathy, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Health Minister Mangal Pandey.

The Congress strongly criticised the incident, calling it inappropriate and humiliating for a woman professional at a public event. Congress leaders demanded a public apology and accountability, with some calling for Kumar’s resignation. Other Opposition parties echoed similar views, stating that intent cannot justify violating a woman’s dignity or personal space.

National reactions and celebrity comments

The incident drew condemnation from leaders beyond Bihar, including several Kashmir-based parties, who termed it a violation of personal and religious dignity. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi called it public harassment, while former actor Zaira Wasim criticised the act on social media, demanding an unconditional apology and stressing that power does not permit crossing personal boundaries.
