Vedanta power plant blast: Toll rises to 16, company announces ₹35 lakh ex gratia

A devastating industrial accident at Vedanta’s power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district has now claimed 16 lives , after three more workers succumbed to injuries following a boiler-linked steam pipeline explosion on Tuesday afternoon. The blast occurred when a high-pressure steel tube carrying steam from the boiler to the turbine ruptured at the Singhitarai village plant, triggering a powerful explosion that left several workers with severe burn injuries.

Initial reports had put the toll at 14, but officials confirmed that the number has risen to 16 as critically injured workers continued to battle for survival in hospitals. Around 20 others remain injured, with several in serious condition. Five workers have been shifted to Raipur for advanced treatment, while others are undergoing care in Raigarh district hospitals.

Preliminary assessments indicate a possible pressure build-up or structural failure in the steam pipeline , though investigators are also examining whether maintenance lapses or human error contributed to the tragedy. A magisterial inquiry and a high-level administrative probe have been ordered to determine the exact cause and review safety protocols at the plant.

In response to the incident, Vedanta has announced a ₹35 lakh compensation and employment support for the families of the deceased , along with ₹15 lakh for the injured , salary continuation until recovery, and counselling assistance. The company said it stands firmly with the affected families and is fully cooperating with authorities. Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal expressed deep anguish over the tragedy, calling the victims part of his extended family and assuring complete support and a thorough investigation.

Earlier, the Chhattisgarh government had also announced ₹5 lakh compensation for each deceased worker’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured, along with directives for free medical treatment and strict action if negligence is found.

The Opposition Congress has demanded a judicial probe and FIR against the plant management, alleging serious lapses in safety standards. As investigations continue, attention is now focused on whether the blast was preventable and whether safety systems at the plant were adequately enforced.
