Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has said mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy will be crucial for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 , urging the franchise to prepare spin-friendly pitches at Eden Gardens to maximise the impact of both Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine .

Du Plessis described the two spinners as “absolute cannons” , adding that KKR must build their strategy around them. According to him, if the pitch does not assist spin, the team risks neutralising its biggest strength. For KKR to succeed in the upcoming season, both bowlers must deliver consistently and dominate the middle overs.

However, fresh concerns have emerged around the franchise’s bowling depth ahead of the tournament. Du Plessis noted that the pace department remains a “question mark” , especially with injury setbacks affecting the squad’s fast-bowling options.

KKR have already suffered a setback after young pacer Harshit Rana was ruled out of IPL 2026 due to a knee injury, leaving the team yet to announce a replacement.

The franchise has made significant changes following a disappointing 2025 season, when it finished eighth with just five wins from 14 matches. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side will begin its IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 29.

Du Plessis also highlighted the importance of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green , who was signed by KKR for ₹25.2 crore , making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL auction history. He described Green as a “complete package” who can contribute with both bat and ball, though the massive price tag will bring significant expectations.

Former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji suggested that Rahane should bat at No. 3 , while Green could slot in at No. 4 to stabilise the batting order. He also backed a top-order combination of Finn Allen , Tim Seifert , Rahane and Green to provide a strong start for the side.

With new signings, injuries and tactical adjustments shaping their preparations, KKR will be hoping their celebrated spin duo can anchor a strong comeback campaign in IPL 2026.
