Varanasi Release Date: Has Rajamouli Given Final Clarity?

SS Rajamouli’s much-awaited Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, is continuing to build buzz ahead of its theatrical release, with the director recently reiterating that the film is scheduled to arrive on April 7, 2027.

At the pre-release event of Don’t Trouble The Trouble in Hyderabad on Tuesday, Jr NTR reportedly asked Rajamouli about Varanasi and whether the film would arrive on April 7. Rajamouli responded in the affirmative, after which NTR told the audience to be ready for the film on the announced date.

However, April 7, 2027 is not a newly confirmed release date. The Varanasi team had officially announced the date on January 30, 2026, when Rajamouli and the lead cast shared the release announcement. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.

Directed by SS Rajamouli, Varanasi stars Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, the antagonist. The film is being presented as a large-scale action-adventure with elements of mythology, science fiction and time travel.

The first glimpse of the film showed Mahesh Babu’s character travelling across different locations and time periods, including Varanasi, Africa and Antarctica. The story reportedly revolves around Rudhra’s quest involving an ancient cosmic artefact and a threat to the world. The glimpse also featured references to the Ramayana era, adding another layer to the film’s narrative.

Rajamouli had also revealed in July that around 80 days of shooting remained, while major action portions had already been completed. The update indicated that the production was continuing with the April 2027 release plan in place.

The film is being produced by KL Narayana and SS Karthikeya under Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business. MM Keeravani is composing the music, while PS Vinod is the cinematographer. The project is also being made with a large-format theatrical experience in mind, including an IMAX presentation.

With Rajamouli once again referring to the April 7 date, attention now shifts to the film’s remaining production work and upcoming promotional material. Varanasi is currently scheduled to reach theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027.
