Vaishali Outplays Goryachkina, Extends Lead in Women’s Candidates

Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali continued her outstanding form in the Women’s Candidates tournament, defeating Russia’s Aleksandra Goryachkina in the 11th round on Saturday to further strengthen her position at the top of the standings.

With her fourth victory of the event , Vaishali moved to an impressive seven points from 11 games , thereby securing an extended lead over her nearest challengers. Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk and China’s Jiner Zhu remain in pursuit, but both could manage only draws in their respective games against Russia’s Kateryna Lagno and India’s Divya Deshmukh.

Playing with the white pieces, Goryachkina opted for the London System in a crucial encounter. Vaishali responded with calm precision, steering the opening into a balanced middle game without conceding any early advantage. After an early queen exchange designed to complicate matters, the Russian attempted to create imbalance, but Vaishali remained composed and matched her opponent’s ideas with accurate calculation.

The key moment arrived when Vaishali found a creative tactical breakthrough , trapping Goryachkina’s rook in the centre of the board. Although the Indian conceded a pawn and a minor piece in the process, she obtained a dominant position with active pieces and better coordination.

From there, Vaishali’s endgame technique proved immaculate , as she converted her advantage with confidence and precision to secure a full point. The victory underlined her growing maturity and ability to handle complex positions under pressure.

Vaishali had begun the tournament slowly, drawing her first four games and suffering a defeat against Jiner Zhu. However, since the sixth round she has produced a remarkable recovery, scoring four wins and two draws , a run that clearly indicates she is peaking at the right time in the competition.

In the open section, her younger brother R Praggnanandhaa endured another missed opportunity after failing to convert a winning chance against Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum, eventually settling for a draw.

Elsewhere, American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura drew with China’s Wei Yi, a result that effectively ended both players’ title hopes. The Netherlands’ Anish Giri also shared points with Russia’s Andrey Esipenko in a balanced encounter.

Tournament leader Javokhir Sindarov remained in control of proceedings, holding a promising position in his ongoing game against American star Fabiano Caruana. Should the game end in a draw, Sindarov would maintain a commanding two-point lead with only three rounds remaining, putting him in a strong position to clinch the title.
