V D Satheesan Emerges Frontrunner as Congress Struggles to End Kerala CM Deadlock
The Congress party’s historic victory in Kerala has unexpectedly turned into a tense leadership battle, with uncertainty over the next chief minister continuing more than a week after the election results. Despite the United Democratic Front (UDF) securing a massive mandate and ending the Left Democratic Front’s decade-long rule, the Congress high command is yet to officially announce its choice for the state’s top post.
In a crucial development, Rahul Gandhi held a final round of discussions with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on Wednesday as the party attempted to break the deadlock. The meeting followed multiple consultations with Kerala leaders, former KPCC chiefs and alliance partners amid rising pressure from party workers demanding clarity on the leadership issue.
The race for the chief minister’s post has primarily narrowed down to three senior leaders — V D Satheesan , K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala . However, political signals emerging from both Kerala and Delhi increasingly suggest that Satheesan has gained a clear edge in the final phase of deliberations.
As Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, Satheesan played a central role in shaping the Congress campaign against the Pinarayi Vijayan government. His aggressive attacks on corruption, governance failures and law-and-order issues helped the UDF regain political momentum after years of setbacks. More importantly, Satheesan enjoys strong support from grassroots workers and several UDF allies, who view him as the public face of the coalition’s comeback.
The delay in announcing the chief minister has also triggered unusual public unrest within the Congress ranks. In Wayanad, controversial posters targeting Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra surfaced outside Congress offices, exposing growing frustration among sections of party workers. One poster warned that “Wayanad will be the next Amethi,” while another criticised K C Venugopal, saying Kerala would not forgive the leadership if grassroots sentiment was ignored.
Venugopal’s emergence as a contender significantly complicated the process because of his powerful position within the national Congress structure. As AICC general secretary (organisation), he is regarded as one of Rahul Gandhi’s closest political confidants and is regularly seen accompanying him during major party programmes and strategy meetings across the country.
However, many Congress leaders believe shifting Venugopal to Kerala could weaken the party nationally. If appointed chief minister, he would likely have to step down from his crucial organisational responsibilities in Delhi, creating a vacuum within the Congress high command ahead of future Lok Sabha battles.
Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala also remains in the race, though observers increasingly see him as a senior balancing figure rather than the frontrunner. Party insiders believe he may eventually play a key role in the government or organisation if a younger leadership structure takes shape in Kerala.
Despite the continuing suspense, momentum within the Congress now appears to favour V D Satheesan . With backing from allies, strong grassroots support and his association with the UDF’s sweeping victory, Satheesan is widely seen as the most likely choice to become Kerala’s next chief minister unless the high command opts for a last-minute surprise.
