Uttarakhand H1N1 Cases Rise to 57 as Dehradun Sees 52 Infections

Uttarakhand has reported 57 cases of Influenza A (H1N1) so far, with 52 detected in Dehradun, prompting the state government to strengthen surveillance and direct hospitals to remain prepared for influenza and other respiratory illnesses.

State Director of Medical and Health Services Dr Shikha Jangpangi said on Wednesday that 57 Influenza A cases had been reported across the state till Tuesday. Dehradun recorded 52 cases, while Nainital reported three and Haridwar two.

Jangpangi said the illness generally causes symptoms similar to the common cold, including cough and fever, which are frequently seen during the monsoon and winter seasons. Most cases usually improve within a few days with adequate rest, fluid intake and paracetamol.

She urged people not to panic but advised them to maintain proper hygiene to reduce the risk of infection. Those experiencing breathing difficulties or other serious symptoms should consult a doctor promptly, she said.

The government’s move comes amid an increase in seasonal influenza and respiratory illnesses reported in some other states. State Health Secretary Vinay Shankar Pandey has directed all District Magistrates and Chief Medical Officers to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure adequate healthcare arrangements.

Hospitals have been asked to keep isolation beds, ICU facilities, ventilators and oxygen cylinders ready to manage influenza and pneumonia cases. They have also been directed to ensure sufficient doctors, nursing staff, essential medicines, PPE kits and N-95 masks.

The guidelines further call for intensive monitoring of patients with Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) at both community and hospital levels. Patient details must be recorded on the Integrated Health Information Portal (IHIP).

Officials have also been instructed to refer patients showing SARI symptoms to designated testing centres and intensify public awareness campaigns on hygiene and other preventive measures.
