USD 13.4 Billion Opportunity: What India Needs to Win the Global MICE Race

India’s MICE tourism industry is entering a high-growth phase, powered by rising corporate travel, expanding business activity and growing demand for conferences, exhibitions, incentive trips and events. Industry estimates cited by BLTM 2026 project India’s outbound MICE market to reach USD 13.4 billion by 2031, highlighting the scale of the opportunity.

The opportunity extends beyond major metros. New convention infrastructure, improved airports and connectivity, and destinations offering heritage, wellness, spirituality, gastronomy and rural experiences can help India attract events. Facilities such as Yashobhoomi and other large convention venues strengthen the country’s ability to compete for international business events.

Technology is another growth driver. Digital registration, AI-assisted event planning, hybrid participation, personalised delegate engagement and data analytics can improve efficiency while helping organisers demonstrate measurable business outcomes. India’s expanding startup and multinational ecosystem is also creating a larger base of corporate buyers.

However, significant challenges remain. High event costs, taxation, regulatory complexity, uneven infrastructure, skilled-manpower shortages and inconsistent international service standards can weaken India’s competitiveness against established MICE destinations. Air connectivity, hotel capacity and smooth movement between airports, venues and accommodation are important for time-sensitive business travellers.

Achieving the 2031 projection will therefore require an integrated ecosystem rather than more convention centres. India needs stronger city-level MICE promotion and convention bureaus that can identify international events, coordinate bids, connect organisers with venues and suppliers, and provide a single-window interface. The Ministry of Tourism has already formulated guidelines for City MICE Promotion Bureaus and a national MICE strategy.

Greater investment in specialised event professionals, multilingual hospitality staff and destination-management expertise will be essential. India must also strengthen global marketing, simplify permissions, improve cost competitiveness and develop a compelling “Meet in India” proposition.

Platforms such as BLTM 2026 can accelerate this process by connecting tourism boards, hotels, travel companies, corporate buyers and MICE specialists through structured business meetings. With sustained policy support and industry collaboration, India can turn its enormous corporate travel base into a globally competitive MICE powerhouse.
