US Winter Storms and Government Shutdown Cause Widespread Travel Chaos

Hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed across the eastern United States on Tuesday, following a series of powerful winter storms that swept through the Midwest and East Coast. The disruptions have been compounded by a partial federal government shutdown , straining airport security and leaving travelers frustrated.

According to flight-tracking site FlightAware , more than 750 flights scheduled into, out of, or within the US were cancelled as of early Tuesday, with about 1,300 delayed . Major airports were hardest hit, including Chicago O’Hare International (~600 cancellations), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (>470 cancellations), and New York LaGuardia (>450 cancellations). The Federal Aviation Administration imposed ground stops at Hartsfield-Jackson and Charlotte Douglas International and ground delays at JFK and Newark Liberty International.

The storm brought heavy snow and high winds of up to 50 mph , creating dangerous conditions for air travel. Many passengers were stranded overnight in airports, while others faced additional hotel costs and travel rerouting. Kelly Price , attempting to return to Colorado from Orlando, described sleeping on the airport floor after her flight was cancelled at the last moment. Another traveler, Danielle Cash , ended up in St. Louis in freezing weather despite planning a warm-weather trip to Florida.

The disruptions coincided with spring break and the NCAA March Madness tournaments , adding pressure on already crowded airports.

Complicating matters, the partial shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security has left TSA workers unpaid , with over 300 agents quitting since it began. Many staff are struggling with evictions, vehicle repossessions, empty refrigerators, and overdrawn bank accounts , forcing some to take second jobs or leave the profession. Union leaders warned that security wait times could worsen , though many officers continue to report to work despite financial hardship.

Airports have reported longer security lines as a result. Louis Armstrong International in New Orleans advised passengers to arrive at least three hours early , while Austin-Bergstrom International showed security lines spilling onto sidewalks in early morning hours. Travelers like Mel Stewart in Atlanta are arriving hours earlier than usual to compensate for slower screening.

The combined effect of severe weather and TSA staffing shortages has created a rare level of travel disruption. Normally, storms alone would cause cancellations and delays, but understaffed security checkpoints are magnifying the delays , leaving passengers stranded and frustrated nationwide. Airline officials and union leaders have called for urgent resolution of the shutdown to restore staffing and improve airport efficiency.

Until then, travelers are advised to check flight status frequently, arrive early at airports , and expect longer wait times at both security checkpoints and boarding gates.
