US Strike on Suspected Drug Boat Kills One as Death Toll From Anti-Cartel Campaign Reaches 208

The US military carried out another strike on a vessel suspected of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing one person and leaving two survivors, as President Donald Trump’s administration intensified its controversial campaign against alleged narcotics traffickers across Latin America.

According to US Southern Command , the operation was conducted on June 16 by Joint Task Force Southern Spear under the direction of commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan . The military described the attack as a “lethal kinetic strike” , saying intelligence indicated the vessel was travelling along known drug-smuggling routes and was operated by organisations designated by Washington as terrorist groups. Authorities, however, did not release evidence showing drugs were on board.

Video released by Southern Command showed the boat travelling through open waters before being struck and engulfed in flames. The military said it immediately notified the US Coast Guard to activate search-and-rescue procedures for the two survivors.

The strike raises the number of people killed in the campaign to at least 208 , up from 207 recorded through June 14. Independent tracking groups estimate the operation has involved more than 63 vessel strikes since September 2025 across the eastern Pacific and Caribbean.

Trump has repeatedly argued the United States is in an “armed conflict” with cartels , describing traffickers as “narcoterrorists” and defending military action as necessary to stop drugs entering the country. Critics counter that the administration has publicly provided little evidence linking those killed to drug trafficking.

The campaign has come under increasing scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers, military legal scholars and human rights organisations. Recent reports involving Ecuadorian fishing vessels, missing crew members and alleged unlawful detentions have intensified calls for transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the Pentagon inspector general is reviewing whether established targeting procedures were followed, though the inquiry does not address the broader legality of the strikes.
