US Sends Fresh Aircraft Carrier To Middle East As War-Weary USS Lincoln Heads Home

The United States has deployed the USS George Washington aircraft carrier to the Middle East, replacing the long-deployed USS Abraham Lincoln as American naval forces continue operations amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

US Central Command said the George Washington entered the region on August 19. The carrier strike group includes the USS Robert Smalls cruiser and USS Shoup destroyer. The Washington is now joining the USS George H.W. Bush in the region.

The arrival comes as the Lincoln begins its journey back to San Diego after an unusually long deployment of around nine months. The carrier has spent more than 250 consecutive days at sea, making the mission one of the longest and most operationally demanding deployments in recent US Navy history.

The Lincoln's extended deployment has also triggered concerns over the wellbeing of its sailors. Reports have cited mental health challenges, crew stress and shortages of food and hygiene supplies, while families and some Democratic lawmakers have demanded greater accountability from the Defence Department.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected what he described as an inaccurate portrayal of conditions aboard the carrier. President Donald Trump has also played down concerns about the length of the deployment, saying US sailors have historically remained at sea for even longer periods.

Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, visited the Lincoln and praised its crew, describing the deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era.

The carrier rotation comes as the US continues enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has given no clear indication of when its military campaign will wind down, while Hegseth has said the blockade could continue indefinitely.

The move also carries strategic implications beyond the Middle East. With the George Washington shifting from the Indo-Pacific, the US temporarily has no aircraft carrier strike group in the Pacific, even as China continues to expand its military activity in the region.

The Navy is expected to deploy another carrier to the Pacific in the coming months, but the latest rotation highlights the growing demands being placed on US forces by the prolonged conflict with Iran.
