A massive explosion at a munitions factory in rural Tennessee on Friday left multiple people dead and about 18 others missing, according to reports. The blast completely destroyed the structure at the Accurate Energetic Systems facility, located around 60 miles west of Nashville. Authorities have not yet confirmed the final number of fatalities, as the scale of devastation has made it extremely difficult to account for victims.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene as one of the most devastating he had witnessed in his career and said determining what happened would take time. Investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have joined the investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Aerial footage showed intense flames and thick smoke rising from debris where the main building once stood, and witnesses reported feeling the blast from miles away.

Earlier reports said 19 people were missing, though one was later found safe at home. Accurate Energetic Systems released a statement expressing condolences to the victims’ families and gratitude to first responders but did not offer an explanation for the incident.

The facility manufactures and stores explosives used for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition purposes. Situated in Bucksnort, Tennessee, the plant covers 1,300 acres and includes multiple production buildings and a testing laboratory. The company is one of the area’s larger employers, offering starting wages of about USD 19 an hour, significantly above the federal minimum wage.

While the factory reportedly maintained a clean safety record in recent years, a similar accident in 2014 caused one death and several injuries. The current investigation is ongoing, with officials warning that it may take considerable time to determine the exact cause of the catastrophic blast.
