Trade teams of India and the United States have begun negotiations to resolve escalating disputes after Washington imposed what New Delhi calls “unfair and unreasonable” tariffs.Brendan Lynch, the Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, is leading the American team, while Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, is India's chief negotiator.Lynch arrived in India late Monday for a day-long talk with his Indian counterpart. The talks aim to prevent further strain on bilateral economic ties, which are already under pressure due to recent geopolitical alignments.

According to officials, India has strongly objected to the US tariffs, arguing they violate trade norms and disproportionately hurt Indian exporters. Washington, on the other hand, insists the measures were necessary to counteract what it views as India’s restrictive market practices.

The opening round of discussions is expected to cover tariff rollbacks, market access, and a roadmap to address long-standing irritants such as agricultural exports, digital trade regulations, and duties on industrial goods. Both sides are under pressure to find a middle ground, with businesses on either side warning that prolonged friction could disrupt supply chains and investment flows.

While the US remains India’s largest trading partner, recent strains have tested the resilience of the partnership. Observers note that the outcome of these talks will set the tone for how the two democracies navigate economic disagreements without derailing their broader strategic relationship, which has deepened in defense and technology cooperation.

Diplomats and trade analysts agree that a quick resolution will not be easy, but both governments have signaled political will to keep the dialogue alive. The coming weeks may prove decisive in shaping the trajectory of one of the world’s most critical trade partnerships.
