The United States has announced plans to withdraw nearly 5,000 troops from Germany over the next six to twelve months , marking a significant shift in its European military posture and raising concerns over the future of transatlantic security. The move comes amid growing political tensions between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz , particularly over disagreements on the Iran–Israel conflict . Despite the reduction, Germany will remain a critical hub for US military operations . Key installations such as Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center , along with the headquarters of United States European Command , continue to support operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa . Analysts emphasise that these facilities are central to US global power projection , not merely regional defence.
