US Consumer Price Index reports September inflation at 3%

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.3% in September, following a 0.4% increase in August. Over the past 12 months, the all-items index increased 3.0%, reflecting steady inflation pressures.

Gasoline was the main contributor to the monthly increase, rising 4.1%, while the overall energy index increased 1.5%. The food index grew 0.2% in September, with groceries up 0.3% and dining out up 0.1%.

Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.2% in September, slightly lower than the 0.3% rise seen in the previous two months. Key increases were seen in shelter, airline fares, recreation, household furnishings, and apparel. Conversely, motor vehicle insurance, used cars and trucks, and communication costs declined.

Food Prices Over the past year, the food index rose 3.1%, with groceries up 2.7% and dining out up 3.7%. Major grocery categories saw mixed trends:

• Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs: +5.2%

• Nonalcoholic beverages: +5.3%

• Cereals and bakery products: +1.6%

• Fruits and vegetables: +1.3%

• Dairy and related products: +0.7%

In September alone, four of the six major grocery categories increased, while dairy products fell 0.5% and fruits and vegetables remained unchanged. Dining out saw a slight increase, with limited service meals up 0.2% and full-service meals unchanged.

Energy Prices Energy costs rose 1.5% in September, led by gasoline. Electricity decreased 0.5%, and natural gas fell 1.2% over the month. Over the past year, energy costs increased 2.8%, with electricity up 5.1% and natural gas up 11.7%, while gasoline decreased slightly by 0.5%.

Other Key Categories

• Shelter costs rose 0.2% in September, including a 0.1% increase in owners’ equivalent rent and a 0.2% rise in rent. Lodging away from home increased 1.3%.

• Airline fares increased 2.7% after a 5.9% rise in August.

• Recreation and household furnishings both rose 0.4%, while apparel increased 0.7% and personal care 0.4%.

• New vehicle prices rose 0.2%, while motor vehicle insurance and used cars and trucks both declined 0.4%.

• Medical care increased 0.2% overall, with hospital services and prescription drugs up 0.3%, but dental services and physician services declined.

Over the past year, prices excluding food and energy rose 3.0%, with notable increases in shelter (+3.6%), medical care (+3.3%), household furnishings and operations (+4.1%), recreation (+3.0%), and used cars and trucks (+5.1%).
