US averts another shutdown

The US Senate on Friday approved a crucial funding bill to finance most government departments through the end of September, passing it with a 71-29 majority. Funding for the Department of Homeland Security , however, was extended for only two weeks. The short-term extension is aimed at giving Congress time to debate new restrictions and reforms on federal immigration raids nationwide.

In a rare bipartisan effort to prevent a government shutdown, President Donald Trump held discussions with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, his political rival, to reach the agreement. To curb overreach by immigration officials , Democrats proposed multiple restrictions , insisting that officers wear body cameras, carry proper identification during inspections, and follow strict warrant requirements when conducting raids in residential areas.
