US Approves USD 108 Million Hawk Missile Support Package for Ukraine

The administration of Donald Trump has approved a USD 108.1 million arms package for Ukraine aimed at sustaining the country’s critical air-defence infrastructure amid intensifying Russian missile and drone attacks. The move signals continued American backing for Kyiv’s defensive capabilities even as Washington scales back broader military assistance and pushes for diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia .

The package, cleared by the United States Department of State , includes components for the Hawk surface-to-air missile system , spare parts, engineering assistance, logistics support and maintenance services. According to the State Department, the proposed sale will help Ukraine “meet current and future threats” by strengthening its integrated air-defence network and improving regional security operations.

The Hawk , short for “Homing All the Way Killer,” is a medium-range air-defence system originally developed by the United States during the Cold War. Although considered an older platform, upgraded Hawk variants remain effective against aircraft, drones and certain cruise missiles. The system has become increasingly important for Ukraine as Russia continues large-scale aerial strikes targeting cities, power infrastructure and military facilities.

A significant aspect of the latest package is support for the so-called “FrankenSAM” programme — hybrid air-defence systems created by combining Soviet-era Ukrainian launchers with Western radar and missile technology. The initiative was developed after Ukraine began facing shortages of Soviet-compatible ammunition while still operating large inventories of older launch systems. Defence analysts say the programme has enabled Kyiv to rapidly expand and sustain its air-defence shield at lower cost and faster speed.

The approval also reflects a broader shift in the Trump administration’s Ukraine policy. Over the past 18 months, Washington has reduced large-scale offensive military assistance while focusing more on sustainment, repairs and defensive support. Analysts view the Hawk package as part of that strategy, helping Ukraine preserve existing capabilities rather than significantly expanding them.

The timing is especially important as Russia has intensified long-range missile and drone strikes in recent months, forcing Ukraine to conserve expensive advanced interceptors such as Patriot missiles . Military experts believe Hawk systems provide a cheaper supplementary layer within Ukraine’s multi-tiered air-defence network, helping protect critical infrastructure and urban centres from sustained aerial attacks.
