Uranium residues behind Turakapalem tragedy

In a shocking turn of events, the Andhra Pradesh government has stepped in to investigate the mysterious deaths in Turakapalem village, Guntur district, which have caused a stir across the state. In a span of just six to seven months, more than 45 people have died in Turakapalem. They would get a mild fever, followed by a rapid decline in their immune system, and then death. Some people who were injured for other reasons also lost their lives, and some died in the hospital after suffering leg fractures. The state now suspects that some unknown illness is behind these deaths. Blood and water samples from the villagers have already been collected and tested.

According to a report by a Chennai-based lab that tested the water, disturbing results were found. The drinking water in the village contained traces of uranium, a dangerous radioactive substance. Experts from Chennai also identified the presence of harmful strontium and E. coli bacteria. They believe that the deaths are a result of using water from quarry pits for drinking.

A team of doctors and scientists appointed by the state government collected and tested samples of water, soil, and blood from the patients. These samples were sent to prestigious labs such as Chennai's lab, AIIMS Mangalagiri, and GGH Guntur. The report from the Chennai lab confirmed the presence of uranium, strontium, and E. coli bacteria in the water sources around Turakapalem. Their report stated that these substances are severely affecting the health of the villagers and causing the deaths.

Experts say that uranium residues are extremely dangerous. If they enter the body through drinking water or food, they first damage the kidneys and cause skin problems. In the long run, they can also endanger the liver, lungs, brain, and bones, and eventually become a life-threatening risk.
