The Upper Sileru Hydroelectric Project is set for a major transformation, with the state government approving its conversion into a 1,350 MW pumped storage facility. The ambitious expansion, scheduled for completion by 2029 , is aimed at meeting future energy demands while strengthening the integration of renewable power sources.

The project’s existing capacity of 240 MW will be significantly enhanced through the installation of nine reversible units, each with a capacity of 150 MW. These units are designed to both generate electricity and pump water back to the upper reservoir, enabling efficient storage and reuse of energy.

Once upgraded, the facility will function as a large-scale energy storage system for the grid. Surplus electricity generated from solar and wind sources during the day will be used to pump water to the upper reservoir. This stored energy can then be released during peak demand periods, helping maintain grid stability and minimize power wastage.

With nearly six decades of operation, the project has demonstrated consistent performance since its commissioning in 1967 to 68, with further additions in the 1990s. Ongoing modernization efforts have enabled it to continue generating around 575 million units of electricity annually.

The expansion is expected to play a key role in strengthening the state’s power infrastructure . By supporting clean energy initiatives and ensuring reliable supply during peak hours, the project will contribute to a more stable and efficient electricity network.
