UP youth amputates foot to claim disability quota for MBBS seat
A young medical aspirant in Uttar Pradesh allegedly amputated his own foot to become eligible for a disability quota seat, police said, exposing the extreme pressure surrounding NEET admissions.
The case surfaced after Suraj Bhaskar , about 20, was found unconscious in Khalilpur village , Jaunpur district , with a severed foot. His brother Akash Bhaskar reported that “unidentified assailants” had attacked him. Police registered a case and began probing under City Circle Officer Goldy Gupta , said ASP (City) Ayush Srivastava .
However, the investigation soon raised doubts. Suraj’s statements had inconsistencies, and his phone records and questioning of a woman linked to the case did not support the attack claim. Investigators also found a diary entry reading, “I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026.”
Police said Suraj had failed NEET twice and was under severe mental stress. To secure a seat under the disability quota, he allegedly amputated his foot and staged the incident. “He tried to mislead the investigation, but his claims did not stand scrutiny,” police said. Suraj is currently being treated at a private hospital, said SHO Satish Singh .
The case has sparked concern that similar attempts could be happening unnoticed, as the pressure to crack NEET and the temptation of reserved quotas push aspirants toward desperate measures. Police are seeking legal opinion on which criminal sections should be applied.
