UP govt launches crackdown on Chinese manjha, arrests 13 traders

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a state-wide crackdown on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of banned Chinese manjha , with authorities moving to dismantle the entire illegal supply network. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described deaths caused by Chinese manjha as “serious crimes amounting to murder” , directing officials to take stringent legal action against producers, sellers, transporters, and warehouse operators.

Following the CM’s directive, district administrations have been ordered to conduct intensive inspections of wholesale markets, online sellers, transport channels, and storage facilities. A special enforcement drive is being implemented across districts, with nodal officers appointed for round-the-clock monitoring . Surveillance has also been intensified on online platforms, social media groups, and informal networks reportedly involved in the sale of banned kite strings.

Authorities are seeking public participation through awareness campaigns in schools and colleges, warning youth about the dangers of Chinese manjha and urging them to abandon its use. Sellers and markets have been cautioned that possession of the banned string will invite strict action. Local police and district administration officials will also be held accountable for any incidents involving Chinese manjha in their jurisdictions.

In Bareilly, as part of the crackdown, 13 traders have been arrested and eight cases registered in the past 20 days, with 60 reels of Chinese manjha recovered . Special teams comprising administrative and senior police officers are conducting raids in urban and rural areas, while manjha manufacturers have been instructed to halt production. An incentive scheme has been announced for citizens providing accurate information about manufacture, storage, or sale of the banned product.

The government’s move underscores its zero-tolerance policy toward Chinese manjha, which has been linked to multiple fatal and grievous injuries in the state. Authorities hope the intensified action, combined with public awareness, will eliminate the banned kite string from circulation and prevent further loss of life.
