UP govt launches cow tourism to boost rural economy, Shelters
The Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched an initiative to make cow shelters self-reliant while promoting rural economic development through “cow tourism.” The state plans to establish an ideal cow shelter in every district, transforming these shelters into tourist attractions.
The initiative aims to generate employment and additional income for rural residents by promoting commercial use of cow-based products, including milk, ghee, dung, and urine. Women’s self-help groups will be central in producing and marketing cow dung-based items locally. Large-scale campaigns will promote eco-friendly products such as cow dung lamps, idols, and decorative items, especially during Diwali.
Livestock and Dairy Development Minister Dharampal Singh stated that these products will be widely available in markets, encouraging public participation in eco-conscious practices under the “Vocal for Local” initiative. Principal Secretary, Livestock and Dairy Development, Mukesh Meshram, directed officials to prepare local plans for commercial utilisation of cow dung and urine to strengthen shelter self-reliance and rural livelihoods.
The program integrates tourism with sustainable agriculture, including natural farming practices, biogas, and compost production. Visitors to the shelters can learn about cow care, eco-friendly products, and rural farming practices, while contributing to the local economy through purchases and tourism-related activities.
By combining tourism, eco-friendly product promotion, and agricultural integration, the initiative seeks to enhance economic empowerment, preserve cultural traditions, and create self-sustaining model cow shelters across Uttar Pradesh.
