UP CM Yogi Adityanath rebuts codeine syrup death claims, warns of strict action

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday strongly rebutted opposition allegations regarding deaths linked to codeine-based cough syrup, asserting that no fatalities have been reported in the state . He told the Assembly that cases related to the illegal diversion of the syrup are being pursued under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act , and the government has successfully defended its position in court.

Addressing the matter, CM Yogi targeted SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi , dubbing them " Do namune ." “There are two types of people: one sits in Delhi and the other in Lucknow. When there is any discussion in the country, they immediately flee,” he said, adding that investigations may reveal links to the Samajwadi Party .

Providing details of government action, Yogi stated that 79 cases have been registered, 225 individuals named, 78 arrested , and raids conducted on 134 firms involved in the illegal supply or diversion of codeine syrup. He warned that no accused will escape , and strict enforcement measures, including potential bulldozer action , will be taken against violators.

On the question of alleged deaths, the Chief Minister categorically said, “there is not a single case of death due to fake drugs or codeine syrup reported in Uttar Pradesh till date.” He described opposition claims as politically motivated, citing the saying, “Chor ke dadhi me tinka” (a guilty person feels the prick of straw in his beard).

Responding to CM Yogi’s remarks, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav urged leaders to maintain public decorum and criticised BJP members for dragging party disputes into the public arena. In a post on X, he said, “People holding constitutional positions should maintain some public decorum and not cross the bounds of propriety.”

The CM also highlighted ongoing vigilance by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) , which continues to conduct raids and monitor firms to prevent violations. He emphasised that all legal and administrative measures under the NDPS Act are being implemented, ensuring strict accountability for individuals and companies involved in the case.
